Original air date: April 19, 2022
"Lipstick on the Rim with Molly Sims" is a podcast hosted by Molly Sims and Emma Chagourmalie, two beauty enthusiasts passionate about everything that makes people look and feel beautiful. They invite health experts, industry insiders, and friends to answer listeners' beauty questions while enjoying drinks.
In this episode, they interview Lisa Odenweller, founder of Kroma Wellness, discussing her journey in the wellness industry and the concept behind Kroma, a five-day lifestyle reset. Lisa shares her personal journey of discovering the power of food as medicine, leading her to start Beaming, a wellness brand. Beaming aimed to make healthy living accessible and enjoyable. Lisa's journey with Beaming led her to create Kroma, a program focused on nourishing the body rather than traditional cleanses.
Unlike typical cleanses filled with sugar and deprivation, Kroma focuses on nourishment and empowerment. It offers customizable plans tailored to individual needs, including options for weight loss or simply feeling better. The program includes a variety of organic, gluten-free, and dairy-free foods, such as matcha, porridge, elixirs, broths, and smoothies. Lisa emphasizes intuitive eating and encourages listeners to trust the process, emphasizing that Kroma is not about deprivation but about feeling good and making sustainable lifestyle changes. Through detailed protocols, shopping lists, and an app, Kroma aims to make healthy living accessible to everyone.
Molly Sims (MS): Hey, I'm Molly Sims.
Emma Chagourmalie (EC): And I'm Emma Chagourmalie.
[MS]: We're two girls obsessed with one thing.
[EC]: Beauty.
[MS]: And by that, we mean everything that makes you look and feel beautiful.
[EC]: We're calling on our favorite health experts, industry insiders, and friends to answer all your beauty questions.
[MS]: With a drink in hand.
[EC]: Definitely with a drink in hand.
[MS]: You're listening to Lipstick on the Rim with Molly Sims. Oh, Emma, I know how much you love to cleanse.
When was the last cleanse you actually got through?
[EC]: I did Prolon. I didn't make it all the way through.
[MS]: How many days did you like the olives?
[EC]: I did three days. I don't like olives, but I like the tomato soup. And then I'm just...
But I'm not like...
[MS]: You're not...
[EC]: I'm not a cleanser.
[MS]: You're not a cleanser. I have to say, I have done many cleanses, many things in my life.
I have to say they are tough. Some tougher than others. But I have recently discovered a body detox.
Not a cleanse.
Lisa Odenweller (LO): I definitely need a detox.
[MS]: We all need to detox.
I'm really excited about today's guest. I have known Lisa Odenweller for 15 plus years. We have the founder of Kroma, Lisa Odenweller, with us today.
I'm so glad you're here. Lisa just launched Kroma late in July of 2021. She's been featured in Forbes, Vogue, Fortune.
I have recently now done it, I think, three times in the last three or four months.
[EC]: It's also all over Instagram. Everyone I see is doing the Kroma detox.
[MS]: It's not a cleanse, and we're going to get into that. It's a Kroma 5-Day lifestyle Reset. You have been on this journey for a very long time.
Just for our audience, I'm going to have Lisa go back a little bit. She started Beaming, which we'll get into. This was the beginning of her wellness journey.
She is known for making healthy taste amazing. She's been in the wellness industry for over 14 years. We're going to tell you all about Lisa, all about her products, everything that you need to know about a cleanse that's not a cleanse.
Lisa Odenweller, I'm so happy you're here.
[LO]: Thank you. I'm so happy to be here. It's so fun to see you, Molly, after all these years.
[MS]: I know.
[LO]: I love this. It's just so fun to have this conversation, because it's so near and dear to my heart. Like you said, I've been on this journey for a long time.
[MS]: Lisa lives in San Diego. You really have been in the wellness space for 14 years. I guess we bonded back over Beaming.
[LO]: We did. I mean, you were having babies.
[MS]: I was having babies.
[LO]: You were drinking our pregnancy smoothies that I created with Laurie Bregman. Laurie Bregman, I love Laurie.
[MS]: Just a little shout-out. Lisa and actually Emma, we all love Laurie Bregman. She has an incredible doula program.
She's one of the best doulas I've ever met. She is incredible for those of you having babies, wanting babies. Look her up.
[LO]: We had just the best time creating the pregnancy smoothies. It was like got milk and get preggy, all these cute things we did. I remember that was our first connection for that.
And Beaming was just the beginning of, I mean, I've really been on this journey for my whole life. But it was the beginning of me really bringing wellness to the forefront. We were way ahead of our time.
I mean, the first cafe for Beaming launched 10 years ago or maybe 11 now. And it was before, when you think about it, it was like Jamba Juice was your option. Barely we had a Moon Juice around, right?
I was living in San Diego, so we had no options in San Diego. And it's hard to believe that just 10, 11 years ago that we were so not where we are today, which is the exciting part, but we also have so much further to go.
[MS]: What did you learn through Beaming? Take us through a little bit about Beaming. Because when I remember, it was amazing shakes and drinks.
And you even had the Beaming cafe.
[LO]: Yeah, we had lots of them. We had 10 cafes. They were so good.
And most of them were in L.A. I mean, for me, it's been this journey since I started when I was little. I mean, I didn't know it when I was young. But I grew up in a healthy family.
I grew up where we were the ones not with Twinkies and Ding Dongs. Most people listening probably don't even know what those are. But we had all just the healthy food.
I exercised my whole life. I always had this underlying desire to feel like, how can I take control of my health? I just didn't want to go to the doctor and someone said, sorry.
And so that was burning in me. As time went on, getting a little bit older, I remember vividly. I was 38.
I went to the gynecologist and I said, hey, like I don't feel great. My hair is falling out. I feel inflamed.
I'm gaining weight. I've got the brain fog. And she laughed and she said, sorry.
You're just getting older. And I was 38. And I thought, that is not an acceptable answer.
There has to be another way. That combined with my daughter, who was at the time 11, and she had been on ADD medication for two years since she was nine, which as a parent, you kind of cringe and you're like, do we really have to do this? Does it really have to be medication?
Like, isn't there another way? Five doctors later, every single one of them said, no, sorry. Medication is the only way.
And so, you know, for me it was just that actually, the ADD medication caused in a mood disorder, and then we had to put her on other medication. And that was a moment of truth as a parent. We were like, this is wrong.
And it really was that moment for me that you have to take health into your own hands. And I started to dive deep into food as medicine. And it really just became this natural, like, how do I heal myself?
How do I heal my daughter and my family? And really as I started to understand how much control we have of our health, how powerful food is, that's where it starts with everything. I kid you not when I say this, within two weeks of removing gluten, sugar, dairy, any kind of processed foods, inflammatory foods that inflame the brain, my daughter was off of all medications and has never gone back on.
[EC]: Really?
[LO]: That's why I started Beaming. If, like, if I peel back all of it, that was my moment that I knew I had to do something.
I was like, this is, we have to take control of our health. We have to know that we actually have more power than we think. And it starts with food.
And it's, of course, managing stress and all those other things. But we actually do control that. And when I saw what I was able to do for my daughter, I mean, friends of mine would say, oh, my child has migraines and the doctor put her on medication.
And I'd say, I think she's probably allergic to gluten. And that's, let's start there. You know, and that's really the conversation.
But the way I've done it is in a way that's not about preaching. It's got to be approachable. And so Beaming was born out of this and how do I do something with this information?
How do I turn it into a positive, help people feel how good you feel when you put good stuff in your body? Not about perfection, but make it delicious and hip and cool and approachable. And when I opened the Beaming Cafe in Del Mar, it was December 2012.
And it was, you know, Del Mar, California in this random strip mall stuck behind McDonald's. Nobody knows that area. And somehow that cafe, we had lines out the door.
Kids were coming there for lunch. They were coming there in between soccer practice. You've been at those, you know, those fields, right?
And they would come there instead of McDonald's or somewhere else. And it, for me, was such a huge win because it was really about how do we reach the whole family? And how do you, if you feel the difference, then you will make different choices.
And that was, you know, that's what Beaming was about. That's how it was born.
[MS]: And so now the next iteration, you started Kroma. Did you start it more so, I hate to say this, but like everyone could have the possibility of having this part of their life, their routine, their wellness program per se, you know?
[LO]: I was so, I mean, when you're an entrepreneur, like it's hard, right? But what drives you, especially when you're so driven by a why, is knowing that you're making impact. So knowing that Beaming was changing so many lives, having such positive impact, my bigger dream was how do I reach more people?
Not just where we have a Beaming cafe. So Kroma was birthed out of really that dream and desire of how do I take off all the good of what these cafes are doing and really make this available to people everywhere but also do it in a way that speaks to where we are in today. Like we're so busy.
We're on the go. We don't want to think. We don't want to, we can't add more complexity to our lives.
We need simplification, but we want to feel great. And I don't want to think about adding this and adding that and what do I do and where do I start? So what I do is I take the mystery and the complications out of it, make it easy, make it amazing, you know, fit into your life easily, taste great, all those things.
[MS]: And we're going to go through the entire cleanse. She's going to explain it. So you get a short thing on my stories on how I do it, but she can really, I mean, we just had Emma try the OMG cookie butter. It's staring at me here and I just want to keep eating it. Macy's. Okay, here's your official reminder.
But let's chat a little bit about recently there's been this whole thing about cleanses are dead, right? Kroma is not a cleanse. And from day one, I remember when we were first talking about it, this is not a cleanse.
Will you kind of explain that to everyone? Because there's very much a zeitgeist at the toxic cleanse culture and how you're really redefining it.
[LO]: I could not agree more. Beeming was born at the time of the juice cleanses, and I would just shake my head. I was like, why are we doing this?
It's filled with sugar, and many days was like 220 grams of sugar a day. Filled with sugar.
[MS]: Filled with sugar. Do you hear that? Just remember, just really quickly, all juicing is not created equal.
So just remember that. And it's like, yeah, it's fruit, but it's still sugar.
[EC]: Well, it's actually what someone said to us the other day is if you're drinking orange juice, how many oranges does it take to make a juice?
[LO]: Just eat orange.
[EC]: Just eat one, and you're going to eat eight oranges in a sitting? You're probably not.
[MS]: Yeah.
[EC]: Like, it's insane.
[LO]: It's insane. And so I watched just the culture of that, and I think we're almost past it, but there's still this stigma. I mean, during that juice fasting days, I'd watch my friends party from Thursday to Sunday, juice fast from Monday to Wednesday so they could fit back in their skinny jeans on Thursday.
I was like, I'm not a doctor, but I know this is not good for you. So for me, it's always been, how do we really change this? I mean, I've been doing this for 13 years.
How do we make it about nourishment? How do we make it so that you're really nourishing your body? We're not taking things away, but we're actually putting good things in your body that help you thrive, not feel deprived, not feel like you can't exercise, you can't show up for your kids, you can't show up for your family.
[MS]: Why did you decide to turn it up on its head? Because when you search, people want to do cleanse. Why did you were like, no, I'm not going to go the easy route.
I'm going to flip it and not say the word.
[LO]: I think that's just my nature. I ask questions and maybe it's an Aquarian thing. I just like to turn things inside out and challenge things.
So for me, a couple of the key things outside of this, sorry, stupidity of so many of these different cleanses of the past and even current was, okay, what's the bigger point? Why are we doing this? Is it just to fit in our skinny jeans?
What if it's really about feeling good? What if it's about empowering ourselves with our health?
[MS]: What if you can have all of it?
[LO]: What if it's all of it? What if it could taste amazing, you feel nourished, you have all the great workouts, all the things in life get better?
[EC]: It's not about health, right? I remember having an ex-boyfriend whose father was a GI doctor and he would literally go nuts when we would use the word cleanse because he was like, it is terrible.
[LO]: Horrible.
[EC]: For your inner…
[LO]: It is. And actually, you really mess up your metabolism too. So when you take that away, there are times where, and again, I don't even like the word cleanse. There's times where under a unique doctor's supervision, maybe it's necessary for some significant thing, whether it's a major gut issue, cancer or something more significant.
There is a place for it. But the way that it's been used in society to me is very abused.
[MS]: Well, it's just like we were talking about a juice cleanse.
[LO]: Yeah. I mean… We thought we were doing something good.
But we sort of knew we weren't because we felt like shit. And that's where I think this is about intuitive eating. This is about like, how do I feel?
Like I should feel like feeling healthy in my body should feel like good. I don't feel like I should have to punish myself to feel good. And I think that has been for 13 years the mission I've been on.
[MS]: And I think the one thing that really sets the program and the Reset apart from everything else that I have tried thus far, it tastes fucking amazing. I'm not going to lie. Like the porridge, and we're going to literally have her now just kind of walk through the whole Reset.
Again, you can do the 5-Day. You can do the 1-Day. You can do a scoop of her OMG cookie butter.
She has amazing products. But I really want her to be able to because we have gotten so many questions, so many DMs about what is Croma like? How do I get it?
What is it? Can you tell us like just the benefits? Like give us the pitch because everybody wants to know it.
[LO]: So one of the things I have to say because I think this is something that gets lost in cleanse culture as well is I care more about what happens after than the Reset itself because that's where real transformation happens. What the Reset does is does exactly that. It Resets habits and behavior, and then it gives you the tools to continue because how many times have you done some sort of program?
Okay, great. You lost a couple pounds if that was the goal. But what happens after is really where the benefits happen because now it's about the lifestyle.
And so Croma was designed with a 5-Day Reset that then leads into the daily essentials, which we call daily essentials, which are now you've done it. You've started your day with what we call our beauty matcha. And my personal goal is to convert the word to matcha because it changed my life.
But our matcha has collagen and turmeric and ginger and what we call our beauty mushrooms.
[EC]: So does that replace coffee for you in the morning?
[LO]: So here's what my philosophy was. All these like cleanses that are taking caffeine out, I get it. It's acidic.
It can cause irritability and jitters, especially coffee. But I know you're going to put it back in. So let me just introduce a healthier way to caffeinate it.
[MS]: See, I love that. I love that because I need caffeine.
[LO]: I have kids in the morning. You'll be miserable if you take it away.
[MS]: I'm miserable if I don't have it.
[LO]: Yes, and so let's just be realistic about this because if we take it away like every other program, you're going to be miserable for three days. You're going to have blasting headaches. You're going to feel terrible.
You're going to be cranky as hell. And what's the point? You're going to go right back to it.
I love matcha because not only does it like totally create this beautiful kind of balance of energy without the jitters and the anxiety and irritability, it's better on the digestion so it's not as acidic, and it's the best mood enhancer ever. So when you start your day, to start your day with that, to me, is like brilliant.
[MS]: And it's delicious.
[LO]: It's so good.
[MS]: And it's beautiful, and it's easily like for me, for someone who is always on the go, as a mom working on a sports field in a studio, it's so easy to take with me.
[LO]: Because you're not going to, like can you imagine like mixing this and I'm going to buy the collagen, the turmeric, like you're not going to do that. And I just happen to be really good at getting super freaky in the kitchen and making it delicious.
[EC]: I do have a question though because I think a lot of the reasons people do cleanses is because they want to lose a couple of pounds. Can you, if you do a 5-Day Reset, expect to lose a couple of pounds? Like is that part of it?
[LO]: What I love, yes. And so because the program is customizable, right, it's really set up so that everybody's body is unique, everyone's goals are different, right? So if you are someone with a high metabolism, you're just looking to Reset because you just need to feel better because maybe you've just been overindulging, right?
Then you can add more to make it work for you because you're not trying to lose weight. For people who maybe you've been on a massive just binge, you know, on Bender and you need a massive cleanup or you're getting ready for the Oscars and you need to lose five pounds, you do it, but you do it in a healthy way. And so since you can customize it for you, if the goal is to lose weight, you will lose weight, but you'll do it in a way that's healthy and it's not messing up your metabolism.
It's really helping you understand how food is your friend.
[MS]: Food is your friend, people.
[EC]: So does your website then walk you through the different options? Like you can go on and you can save.
[LO]: The website and the app, actually.
[EC]: The app, amazing. I love an app. So I can say, hey, I want to go on here.
I'm not looking to lose weight. I'm just looking to, you know, tighten things up a little bit in my diet. I mean, you know the brochure. It's very detailed.
[MS]: It is so detailed, the Kroma brochure. It's so detailed.
It literally gives you a shopping list. It will tell you everything you need.
[LO]: The shopping list, the protocols, which one based on who. Then there's a whole quiz of like based on what you've told us, that this we recommend the lean, the lifestyle, the active, because that's your goal. It has to be individualized, right?
I mean, these one size fits all does not work. And I need to be able to show up for my work, for my kids. I want to exercise every day.
I don't have the time to be slowed down. And that's what this is designed for is to keep you going. I want to mention something, too, I think it's really important.
When I was designing the Kroma Reset and we were doing all of our betas, about 130 people went through the betas, which is actually how I ended up raising money, is that people fell in love with the program. But something that was really interesting to me in that process is when several women went through it, they said, oh, gosh, how many calories? That was the question.
How many calories are on the program? And I'm always hesitant to answer because we have such a weird reaction to calories as women, sadly.
[MS]: I don't want to know.
[LO]: And so I said, well, because it's customized, well, it really depends. The program alone is 1,000, but by the time you add almond milk or berries to your porridge or protein and vegetables to your broths, you know, it depends. So realistically, probably somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000.
I cannot tell you how many women said to me, that's too many calories, I'm going to gain weight. And I said, I get it, but will you trust the process? Every single one of those women who had all been trying to lose five pounds since I've known them all lost five pounds.
And it literally changed their relationship with food because they realized, like, so for example, we started with the matcha right for the day. Then you get this beautiful porridge that's nuts and seeds.
[MS]: And it's so good and so filling.
[LO]: So filling, so satiating, and it's igniting your metabolism. It's setting you up for success for the day. It's igniting your brain.
All the things we want, but then we've created this dynamic, like can I eat this? Can I not eat that? So the Reset really helped people not only, in that case, lose the pounds that they had tried to.
They felt amazing. And then they were able to keep drinking.
[EC]: Not afraid of calories.
[LO]: Not afraid of calories. I've been that woman my entire life.
[EC]: I think we all are. I mean, I think that's like.
[MS]: Yeah, I don't think there's a woman. I mean, maybe.
[LO]: I think I have one friend.
[MS]: Genetically, you're blessed that you don't. I mean, I can't say that one person that I know doesn't worry or doesn't think about, oh, how many calories, which is so interesting because I love Applebee's and Chili's. And then when they started putting the caloric amounts.
[EC]: Hillstone.
[LO]: Hillstone.
[MS]: It was my favorite restaurant, and I went in there, and I'm like, I can't eat anything. Oh, my God. I'm like, you can't do that.
[EC]: I know.
[MS]: It kills it.
[EC]: It does.
[MS]: Although, I mean, listen, I do think that.
[EC]: In some cases, it's helpful because it's very easy to also overate. It makes you aware, you know, of what you're doing. Now, you mentioned gluten and things being gluten-free. Are all the products gluten-free?
[LO]: Everything is, it's organic, it's gluten-free, it's dairy-free, it's processed-free, everything is clean as clean gets, non-GMO. I actually sourced, we have 125 superfoods in the program. I sourced almost all of them myself.
Down to finding a unique plant protein in Ecuador that's grown at 10,000 feet, that's non-lectin, non-isolate, nine essential amino acids, and doesn't have the harshness that a lot of other plant proteins can have, or they taste terrible. I went and found things in the world that no one else even knows about, or no one knows how to use. And that's also part of, just even down to the nuance of the maple sugar that we use, that just gives it that perfect balance of sweet.
All of those little details matter.
So you get 10 things a day.
[MS]: 10 things a day.
[EC]: I actually have them laid out in front of you so you can see.
[MS]: That's the 1-Day thing, right?
[EC]: No, this is.
[LO]: That's the 1-Day, but that's what a whole, every day on the 5-Day looks like this.
[EC]: It's amazing. It's a lot.
[MS]: Walk us through that because our listeners can't see what we have out here.
[LO]: So we start with the beauty matcha we talked about earlier. Then have that super porridge we also talked about. And then throughout the day, you're going to get different elixirs. There's a hydration elixir that you can drink all at once after a workout.
Yes, you get to work out on this. If you feel like that's part of your lifestyle. There's a smoothie.
Most people don't even get to the smoothie. It's just an extra thing. Again, it's about intuitive eating.
Do I need this? Do I not?
[EC]: Definitely feel full on this Reset.
[MS]: I'm not driving.
[LO]: You were saying like you didn't finish everything. I had a guy.
[EC]: Ashley who works on our team. She's our producer. She did it. And you, I don't think you did get through everything. Schaefer, did you get through everything? No, no. It's so, but everybody loved it. It's a lot. So it's not like you're not going to be deprived.
[LO]: You're not going to be deprived. I had one of my guy friends did it the other day because he had COVID and he had had surgery and he had gained a bunch of weight. He did it and he called me and he actually felt bad.
And he's a big guy and he eats a lot. He says, Lisa, I feel really bad, but I can't finish it all. And I was like, that's the point, right?
It's an abundant amount of food. You make it work for you. I don't want people to feel like you're going to go into this torturous chamber.
So then you go into your smoothies and you have two broths a day. You have a lunch of it's either veggie broth.
[MS]: I love a broth.
[LO]: It's a bone broth or a chicken broth.
[MS]: The broths, I just have to say are amazing.
[LO]: They're so good, right?
[EC]: What if you're not like a smoothie person? I'm not a big smoothie person.
[LO]: Then don't eat the smoothie.
[EC]: Can you bump up and have more broth? I love a broth. I'll drink broth all day long.
[LO]: So you get to, again, you get to make it work for you. The broths, saute some vegetables, put some protein in it. You're going to be surprised that you don't actually need as much as you think you do because you're going to listen to your body.
I live sort of on this outside of indulging and great dinner because I'm a foodie. I love nice meals. We don't happen to have much good food in San Diego.
So I save that for LA. So you have these two broths a day. You have in the afternoon, you're going to have a super greens elixir that's just like 76 super greens.
[MS]: And let me tell you something. That is also, that's something where you feel like it's called fuel and it gives you fuel.
[LO]: It doesn't it. I always do it in the afternoon, which is why we have it set up there. And then there's also like an afternoon latte because, you know, there's that dip in the day where you're like.
[MS]: That's the hardest time for me.
[LO]: Wait, hold on.
[MS]: Remember that question. Okay. So then you've got the super passion latte the afternoon.
Then you've got another kind of veggie broth miso or beef broth or chicken broth because it's so good.
[LO]: And I love broths because they're so nourishing. They're so great for your gut. And don't you feel like when you have the broth, you just feel like you're doing something good for your body. And it's warm and it feels warm. It's good.
[EC]: And I love this news. We are big fans of magnesium.
[LO]: We love it's such a deficiency, actually. And so people don't realize how important it is that we talk about that really quickly.
[EC]: And then I want to go back to like that four o'clock, four to five o'clock. Let's do that.
[LO]: So with magnesium specifically, this one has three different types of magnesium. And magnesium is so powerful because it's how your muscles repair, right? It's obviously great for digestion.
It's so deficient in our diet that we have to supplement with it. And there's all magnesiums are not created equal. So you have to try out different ones.
We did it in such a way where we took three really very powerful magnesiums, put them together. There's a prebiotic in there as well. It's this powder and it just tastes delicious, actually.
But it also helps you go to sleep. I always find out that when I do it, I have to like do it maybe one or two hours before bed. Otherwise, it'll put me out because it does work.
[MS]: Really work.
[EC]: Magnesium is good for if you have like leg cramping at night.
[LO]: Yeah.
[EC]: It's so good for that.
[LO]: So that's the deficiency.
[EC]: Yeah.
[LO]: I had someone tell me the other day that they put it in a wine glass and they made it.
[EC]: Oh my God. That sounds like us. That's exactly what we would do.
[MS]: Okay. So can we talk and go back in that fuel question? We get a lot of questions like what kind of snack would you do or recommend or what do you drink at four o'clock?
I know some people can't do like an iced coffee or, you know, a matcha tea or something because it gives them too much caffeine. But what is something that you could give separate to, you know, the Cromark? You stop eating that cookie butter.
[EC]: I'm like, oh my God, it's so good.
[MS]: Will you tell our listeners like what are some things that women can do or men can do or even for kids, you know, we have six between us that can give us that a little bit about that more fuel.
[LO]: Yeah. I mean, I think there's that afternoon dip, right? That's probably when we're most hit, right?
And so the way that this program was designed, so whether it's the cookie butter that you're enjoying and you have a bite of that and just got some great fats, a little bit of protein, it's just going to be that little pick me up to keep going because your body does need to be nourished at the day. It doesn't want to be starved. And especially as busy moms, when we're running around, I don't know how many times like I forget to eat, right?
[MS]: Yesterday, we did like four or five hours solid. By the time we actually sat down and ate, we were like starving. But then we were like not.
And then like we got full quickly. It was interesting, right?
[LO]: And then you grab things that you wouldn't have otherwise grabbed. I go for the rice crackers or cheese or something.
[MS]: What do you recommend in terms of like snacks? So I snack, but whatever.
[LO]: So what I use personally is I'll go to a bone broth because I know it'll satiate me and immediately like I'm not hungry and I know it's good for me. The cookie butter is another really great go-to.
Sometimes I'll use a smoothie in the afternoon. I love.
[MS]: What's your favorite? What's Lisa's favorite kind of smoothie?
[LO]: I am so simple in this way. It's so funny. I'm a vanilla.
[EC]: I'm a vanilla ice cream. Is there a chocolate? Is there a chocolate option?
[LO]: There's a chocolate. There's a blueberry. There's the vanilla.
[MS]: I love the vanilla.
[LO]: I love the vanilla. And I just have it simple.
I don't even add anything to it. I just like it like that. But the super greens, it does have this little just because you're getting so much nutrition in this one glass.
It does give you that pick-me-up. And I think water like, you know, we forget that water is like really powerful. Like sometimes that's all we need or tea, you know, hot water and lemon.
You know, I love our fasting tea. It's so good. That ginger turmeric.
It's in the 5-Day.
[MS]: Okay. Yeah, I was going to say I haven't. I don't know about the fasting tea.
I need the fasting tea.
[LO]: That's in the 5-Day. Okay.
And I have to just be honest with you guys. I have struggled with my skin my whole life and I'm older than everyone in this room and it's been a lifelong process for me to get my skin healthy. And so what I know is beauty from the inside out.
That's my world, right? Is using food for my skin. Now, topically, I'm like so ignorant.
[MS]: What were your issues?
[LO]: Well, you know what? I had horrible cystic acne, huge pores. A lot of that was food-related.
Of course, back then we weren't having these conversations. Nobody talked about gluten and what that was probably doing for cystic acne and all the other triggers that I was, I'm sure, responding to. So that effect over the years, a lot of oxidative stress, you know, just things I didn't know how to take care of my skin.
So it's been a lot of undoing as I've gotten older. And, you know, I find that certain things have worked really well for me, like microneedling with radiofrequency or PRP, like certain things have really helped me repair the skin over the years. And then just what I put in my body.
Now, specifically on, you know, brands or things that I like, again, I'm the worst at this. Like I need to learn from you guys. So you guys can teach me.
[EC]: We can help you.
[LO]: I know I've come to the right place. So in some ways, I'm going to turn the tables on you. But, you know, the things that I use now, like I love Dr. Talib Nigma. I really like some of her products.
[MS]: Nigma, that's who told us about Nigma. I think Sif told us about Nigma.
[LO]: I really like her products. I'm using her skincare now. I love some of the Goop products.
Again, I'm like, so just naive in this.
[MS]: They have a great kind of exfoliating glow.
[LO]: I love that glow.
[MS]: It's so good.
[LO]: I love that.
And I actually love the toner and the face wash.
[EC]: But like, their oil is great. If you've got, I love a face oil. I love it.
[MS]: And it doesn't break you out.
[EC]: No.
[LO]: But, you know, here's the other thing, like vitamin C is so good for you and Retin-A. I can't do it.
[MS]: Really?
[LO]: I get these weird little scabby things all over my face. So it's sort of like food, like everyone's skin is unique. Everyone's body is unique.
And so I've had to play with things because the things that are like, you know, changing the world that people swear by, a lot of times I can't use. So even sometimes the really clean products are the ones that disrupt me the most, which is so bizarre.
[MS]: Do you do any lasers or peels or anything like that?
[LO]: I haven't done that for a while ever since I really switched to the microneedling.
[MS]: I love it. I just did it.
[LO]: Yeah, I love it. And I do feel, I mean, I've done some of the really intense ones in the past. I can't tell you that they really did a whole lot, you know, it was pretty invasive.
But I think again, I mean, I have olive skin, so that's also, you know, going to have a different impact. But then what do I swear a lot? But like makeup-wise, I love, I love Supergoop, you know, for just...
[MS]: I know, we all love Supergoop. The use screen, the glow screen, their sunscreen is mint.
[LO]: And then is it Saie?
[MS]: Uh-huh, S-A-I-E.
[EC]: I love their sun melt.
[MS]: The slip tint too.
[EC]: Oh, the slip tint and then their sun melt.
[MS]: What's a sun melt?
[EC]: It's their bronzer, but it's creamy.
[MS]: It's very good. It just came out.
[LO]: Oh, I don't think I've tried that one.
[MS]: Six, seven months ago.
[EC]: Yeah, it came out a little while. I just started using it, but I really like it because it just gives you like a bit of like a dewy tan. I love a dew.
Yeah, she loves a dew and loves a tan.
[LO]: You know what I also love is Jones Road.
[EC]: Oh, Bobbi Brown. Oh, you do?
[LO]: I love it. I love her little cheek glow stuff. She sent me a bunch of stuff.
But you guys can tell me too what some of the must-haves that I have to do because I'm so silly this way.
[MS]: I think vitamin C.
[EC]: Superfoods?
[LO]: Find a vitamin C.
[EC]: That works for you.
[MS]: What if the SkinCeuticals?
[LO]: That one hasn't worked. I've tried the goop version. I've tried.
[MS]: Georgia Louise has a pure one that comes in like a set. That's really beautiful and nice. I don't, again, I don't.
[EC]: 111 Skin has a really good one that I started using that's just pure vitamin C. It's like in a little black dropper and it's pure vitamin C.
[LO]: You guys are so like, I love all your tips.
[EC]: The reason I ask is because that's the one common thing every skin care expert we've talked to, we said, what is, if there's one product you need to have in your arsenal, what is it? Hands down, they all said vitamin C.
[MS]: Hands down.
[EC]: Okay. We're on a mission now.
[MS]: An exfoliating toner, whether it be like a P50 for like, you know, making your pores smaller. It's Biologique Recherche P50, 1970. Roll Fern also makes one.
It's a little less potent.
[EC]: Augustus Bader makes a good one too.
[MS]: Also, Rodial. Their exfoliating brightening pads are the bomb. Like, really good and they smell amazing.
You should try that. This is so great.
[LO]: I love it.
[MS]: Thank you. It's all about, you know, shrinking and tightening.
[LO]: It is, especially as we get older.
[MS]: What's your mascara really quickly? Because you've got great mascara on right now.
[LO]: I love the Beauty Counter. I love her new one. And then I also love the Benefit one.
[EC]: The Boing or whatever it's called. Boing is the concealer. I know you're talking about bad gal lashes or something like that.
[LO]: Something like that. Yeah.
[EC]: All right.
All right. Rapid fire time.
[MS]: We're going to do a little bit of rapid fire with the wellness edition. What is the one thing you wish everyone would stop eating?
[LO]: I would say, sorry this isn't rapid, just no diet sodas.
[MS]: Yes. There's a great new brand called Olipop.
[EC]: I know you love that.
[MS]: I do.
[LO]: Yeah.
[EC]: One habit every person should put into their routine.
[LO]: Kroma. No, I'm just joking.
[MS]: Matcha.
[LO]: Matcha.
[MS]: Wellness product you can't live without.
[LO]: The Kroma Reset.
[MS]: Go-to form of workout.
[LO]: If efficient, it's a HIIT workout. If I have time or I'm on conference calls, it's a Power Walk.
[EC]: Coffee or tea? I think I know the answer to this one.
[LO]: Neither.
[MS]: Matcha. Favorite supplements.
[LO]: Magnesium, omegas, B-complex are so important. For women, especially for our moods and PMS. Do you have a favorite brand? I'm sure I do, but I can't think of them right now.
[MS]: Thorn is a good one. Thorn is a great brand. O-T-H-O-R-N-E, yes.
[LO]: You do need to know if you need methylated or not, but I don't want to get complicated with that, but yes.
[MS]: Who do you look to for opinions on all things beauty and wellness?
[LO]: You guys.
[MS]: What's your biggest pet peeve?
[LO]: Probably criticism.
Self-criticism and criticism of others. Just more compassion for ourselves and others is what I hope for.
[MS]: We have to ask you this. What is your Lisa Odenweller's favorite cocktail?
[LO]: Oh, well, I have two. Give it to us.
Have you heard of Amass? A-M-A-S-S?
[MS]: Oh, yes, yes, yes.
[LO]: Didn't I tell you about this?
[MS]: Yes, and I got them and it's great.
The white cans and the black cans.
[LO]: So good.
[MS]: So good.
It's called Amass. A-M-A-S-S. I have it at the house.
You have to try it. By the way, at the farm shop, they had it up behind the bar.
[LO]: Yeah, they would have it.
[MS]: And Erewhon has it too. Yeah, explain a little bit. It's like a...
[LO]: It's a clean seltzer. Yeah. Basically, without...
It just feels clean and there's a bunch of superfoods. Like I say, if it was...
[MS]: There's alcohol in it? Yeah.
[LO]: If Kroma wasn't alcohol, it's so pretty.
[MS]: She told me that's how she pitched it to me. She was... If Kroma was alcohol, this is what you would be drinking.
[EC]: Onda is the one that I was telling you about that I'm obsessed with.
[MS]: Yeah.
[LO]: Which one?
[MS]: Onda.
[EC]: O-N-D-A. It's like a clean Paloma in a can and it's delicious.
[LO]: Ooh, I think I found that one recently.
[EC]: And it's phenomenal and it's got no sugar.
[LO]: And then because obviously a moss isn't going to be at most restaurants, I'm always going to be tequila. Tequila all the way.
[EC]: Always.
[MS]: Lisa, before we go, if you could give your 10-year-old self a piece of advice, what would it be?
[LO]: To just trust the process, to know that this is all part of the journey and that it's just a moment in time. So as things hit us, kind of just finding grace through them. What's the opportunity to learn and grow?
And then tomorrow's a new day.
[MS]: I love it.
[EC]: I love it. You're amazing. I'm so excited to try this.
[MS]: Everybody wanted you on. I have to say, normally we don't have someone just as like a founder, but we are obsessed with you.
We're obsessed with your products.
[EC]: I've become a detox queen.
[LO]: Guys, thank you.
[MS]: I have to say, we have gotten so many questions on, can I do it? Do I need to do it? And what will happen if I do it?
And I, you know, we really, you know, I wanted to try it. And I tried it again.
[EC]: I'm stealing this.
[MS]: Again, you know, really think about what Lisa and how she really believes food is medicine. And I think if you guys can really take one thing from this podcast today, food is medicine. Feed your body, heal your body.
[EC]: Don't be afraid of it.
[MS]: And don't be afraid of it. You're amazing.
[LO]: Thank you.
[MS]: Tell everybody where we can find you.
[LO]: So sweet. You can find Kroma Wellness at Kromawellness.com or on Instagram with a K. And then you can find me on Instagram at Lisa Udenweller.
[MS]: And everything will be on mollysims.com. We've covered a lot, but we'll cover the complete Reset. And again, if you just want to try 1-Day or you're just like, I just want to try the latte or just do something.
And again, it doesn't have to be Kroma, but be healthy with your body. And I do think that's the one thing. Listen, we talk a lot about being healthy, being your best self.
And that is the ultimate goal for all of us. I mean, we're all mothers and we want to be here for a very long time.
[LO]: As long as we can. We do.
[MS]: You are the best. That is a wrap. Right there.
[EC]: That was amazing.
[MS]: That was amazing.
[EC]: Thank you.
[LO]: Thank you.
[MS]: We love our listeners. Make sure DM, ask questions. We're going to do a couple of polls coming up on a few more things you guys want to have us really deep dive in.
And I'm so glad Kroma, you're with us today. We love you.
[LO]: Thank you. It's been an honor. It's so much fun. Love you guys. See you next week where I'm going to be detoxed and fabulous. Bye, guys.
